The Reason Behind The Sivananda Yoga Class Sequence

 

The Sivananda Yoga Class sequence is the practice of yoga asanas (postures) taught by Swami Vishnudevananda. It is well known in the yoga community as a classical yoga practice that goes beyond the physical and mental benefits of yoga.

About The Sivananda Yoga Sequence:

The sequence is based on 12 postures. It closely resembles thee practice of Hatha Yoga. In Sivananda Yoga you follow the sequence , you hold the postures with awareness , breath control and focus of the mind. The practice is combined with pranayama (breath work), relaxation in between the poses and a final yoga relaxation.

Why Do We follow the Sivananda Asana Class Sequence?

We start with Headstand, which affects the crown of the head, where the brain is located, sending blood flow to the brain and focus to the third eye.
Then we do Shoulderstand , Plough, and Fish. All these 3 asanas affect the thyroid gland, (increasing metabolism), the Fish, affects the thymus gland, which affects the health of the heart, When we do the back bend series and do postures like Cobra or Locust, we affect the areas of the kidneys, and for females the health of the sex organs.

When we come to the last Asana, which is Shavasana, (corpse pose) we are withdrawing the consciousness of the body starting from the bottom and ending at the top (feet to head).

This  is how the yoga asanas taught by Swami Vishnudevananda are designed. This is the original sequence of creation, and this is also the way of how the pranas (life-forces) flow through the system and exit. So on the pranic level this is the correct sequence. On the physical level as a matter of course, this is the correct sequence, because the physical body follows the sequence of the flow of prana or life force energy. This sequence has a profound effect over the physical body.

So Swami Vishnudevananda did not design the asanas in this order haphazardly, just by mistake, or by inspiration. He designed the Sivananda sequence from beginning of the path to  the very end. He belongs to the main tradition, and with the energy he got from doing the Sivananda practice he built a huge organization with followers all over the world.
